1. Your project provides vital infrastructure or public value even without huge vanity metrics
2. You submit a short written explanation of why your project matters to the broader community
3. Make it specific and concrete — name who relies on it and what breaks without it

03. Start doing this immediately

A reviewer is looking for a real, active maintainer or contributor. You can't fake that — but you can make sure yours is obvious and easy to verify. Work through these before you hit submit.

1. Be active in the last-3-months window
Recent activity is an explicit criterion. Ship commits, review open PRs, or cut a release now so your contribution graph clearly shows current involvement.

2. Lead with your strongest project
Pick the single repo closest to 5k stars / 1M npm downloads — or the one most critical to the ecosystem. You get one application, so make it count.

3. Make your maintainer status legible
Ensure your GitHub profile and the repo clearly reflect your role and merge access. A reviewer should confirm "yes, this person maintains this" in seconds.

4. Tidy the repo's front door
A clear README, a license, a contributing guide, and a recent changelog signal a serious, living project — and make the impact case for you.

5. Draft your "why it matters" story now
Especially for the Ecosystem Impact track: write a tight, specific paragraph naming who depends on your project and what would break without it. Concrete beats grand.

6. Get your GitHub account in good standing
Verified email, 2FA on, no outstanding flags. The bar is "in good standing" — clear it before you apply, not after.

7. Confirm the basics + apply once
Check age, country availability, and that you're not Anthropic-affiliated. Then submit a single, polished application — duplicates are disregarded.

04. How to apply, step by step

Once your project and profile are ready, the application itself is quick. Follow it in order.

1. Go to the official page — Open claude.com/contact-sales/claude-for-oss. Only apply through Anthropic's own site — ignore any third-party "sign-up" links.

2. Skim the Terms & Conditions — Read the program terms at anthropic.com/claude-for-oss-terms so there are no surprises about billing or eligibility.

3. Start the application & connect GitHub — Begin the form and sign in with the GitHub account in good standing that holds your maintainer or contributor history.

4. Choose your track — Select the Maintainers track or the Ecosystem Impact track — whichever presents your work most honestly and strongly.

Already on a paid Anthropic plan?
Your current billing is paused for the six-month benefit period, then resumes at your then-current plan and rate unless you cancel.

No auto-renewal at $200/month
When the six months end you simply drop back to your prior plan. You won't be auto-charged the Max 20x rate.

This is a subscription, not API credits
The grant covers Claude Max — not API usage. If an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set in your environment, Claude Code may route to the API and bill separately. Audit your env vars first.
